Hi all

I have a floating chipboard floor in my kitchen. From what I can see there are no joists or batons. The chipboard has a thin layer of polystyrene beneath it, and this then sits on top of a concrete sub floor.

I was hoping that I'll be a able to fit some reclaimed floorboards on top of the chipboard. Is this possible and if so what would the best way to fit them be?

Cheers

Max

I am guessing your reclaimed boards will not raise your floor height to cause problems between rooms, and they are T&G, best way to deal with your challenge is to use one of the adhesives for contact fixing your new boards, available at Jewsons or similar. (its a bit like contact adhesive but you work with it wet) adding to that you could secret nail the boards through the tongue whilst fitting, but this alone would not be enough on chipboard sub floor. MOST IMPORTANT, you have the new boards in the same room or close to, for as long as possible (hopefully a couple of weeks) before fitting. Wherever they have been they will not be at the same moisture content as your room and if you fit them too quickly will still move and split and push like mad! Good luck

Yep, that's right.

The existing chipboard floor is T and G, but the boards we plan to use won't be. We want to use old reclaimed floor boards, and lay them so that there are small gaps between them as there is in older properties.

Does all this still apply now that I've answered the other two questions? Either way, thanks a million for your time and help.
