Hi Guys

Im just refitting a new bathroom suite at home and have carefully taken the tiles off the wall... which turned out to be a waste of time as the backing plaster needed hacking off anyway.

So off comes the old plaster "simples"! Then the dilema... I have just been reading through the forums and have got my self all confused.

I have no problems with getting the walls square etc, but as from a tiling perspective im a bit of a novice... I have done a few small bits so know the basics.

Should I:
a: Dot and dab then plasterboard the walls and tile straight on it around the bath area? If so is there any special type of board/prima I have to use or adhesive for plaster board? Do I have to skim the board first before tiling?
b: Screed the walls, then backing plaster (just read you cant tile straight on to back plaster ) and then top coat that and then tile on top?

The tiles I will be using are 200 x 200... is there any weight issues I need to be aware of?

Any advice appreciated.

if you have the room then definatly D&D plasterboard then leave it bare prime the board with an acrylic primer then tile straight on! plasterboard will carry aprox 30kgs per meter in weight and will be the flatest surface fo tiling!

Plasterboard is a better substrate to tile onto as it can hold more weight in addition to not having to wait weeks for plaster to dry. Round any wet areas (bath, shower) I would recommend tanking with a paint on solution (BAL WP1, Mapegum, Dunlop, ardex.... all do one)

It may or may not need priming depending on the adhesive you use, if you are using ceramic tiles of that size then you can use a ready mixed adhesive (BAL White Star, Mapegrip Plus...) although cement based bagged adhesive would be better.

Thanks guys thats great =).... regarding the tanking solutions listed below (BAL WP1, Mapegum, Dunlop, ardex,) for the wet areas (baths, sinks) etc... is it just a paint on liquid solution?

Im assuming you can get that stuff from any typical hardware store B&Q, Wickes etc??

They are a paint on solution but quite thick, you can apply with a brush but I normally use a trowel, either works

Like Marc says go to either a local independant tile shop or a large national like CTD or Tilegiant to get decent gear - Don't go to Topps as if you aren't trade you will pay for it dearly
