Hi there I have been asked to install a new picket fence 8 foot of it will be 6 foot high and 60 foot at 3 foot high. Wooden posts to be concreted in and remove small border type fence and get some overgrowth out of the way. I will be working alone and I have gave them a quote based on 5 days work at £500 but any days I go over it will still be £500 but any days less it will be £50 a day off the £500 price. They are supplying all materials, is this a fair price? Many thanks dan

Hi there I have been asked to build a picket garden fence it will be 6 ft high for 8 ft long and 3ft high for 60 ft. Remove small boarder fence and remove some weeds and branches out of the way, concrete in wooden posts and build new fence I have quoted £500 based on it taking 5 days, any days I go over the price will still be £500 but any days under the 5 will be £50 off cost each day. Is this a reasonable quote? All materials supplied so quote based on labour only. Many thanks dan

If it takes 5 days and you are happy with £ 100 a day then that's up to you.

Personally if I quote a fixed price for a job like this and allow 5 days but finish in 4 it's still the price I quoted.

They didn't sound very happy with the price on the phone but I would be massively surprised if they get a cheaper quote

Assuming you are correct with 5 days I'd be charging £ 650; without seeing the job though I can't say whether I'd have quoted 5/6/7/ or more days.

I think 5 days should be about right. Well at least u would have quoted more than me. Fingers crossed I get the job. Do u know much about quoting for small plumbing jobs?

Small Plumbing jobs are pretty much my bread and butter.

What you need to do is decide what hourly rate you need to charge to cover your overheads and living expenses.

Once you have an hourly rate then X by roughly how long the job should take + parts costs.

Agree with wine-o. It's up to you what you're happy to work for but when I price something then that's the price, rarely I go over but it's out of my pocket if I do and mostly I'm on time but sometimes finish earlier and it's a bonus(for me!)
It depends how quick you work but fencing can be a bit tricky as when digging out for posts a hole can take 10 minutes or an hour and a half depending on what type of ground you have.
I'd use postcrete as well, much quicker and you can start fencing the same day.
A nail gun help massively as well.

A quote is a fixed price. That's the price that is paid by the client no matter how long the job takes. It is just for specific work though. Not any "extras" that are needed or are found to be necessary. There is generally the proviso for possible unseen extra work being done at "parts plus labour" "cost plus profit" or similar wording.
You don't knock anything off for finishing early. Being self employed is about making a living for you and your family.

An estimate OTOH is a "guesstimate". Generally you try to be within 10% but it's only a rough guide of price.

£100 a day is too cheap for s-e these days IMHO, but as wine~o says that's your call.

If you worry too much about whether people can pay for work or not, you will end up working for nothing.

Thanks for the help guys. I only really just started out with my handyman business so I didn't want to price to much and not get the job but absolutely I don't want to end up doing it and not making a reasonable amount. U don't think it's rediculously under what I should have quoted..... Do u?
