Due to the event in my signature (soon to be removed as it's now over until next August) I've been visiting Facebook fairly regularly recently.

I signed up several years ago but it didn't do anything for me so although I have a basic idea of how it all works, there is one item I can't work out.

If I go to our pottery group page, or my own page, there is sometimes a number next to *Home*, as per pics below.

What's it for?

I'm not much of a Facebooker, but I think it's just "notifications".
People have updated etc. yawn.
I've just been on there today turning off everything I can.
I don't really use it much, but it kept sending me emails.

I get notifications a bit further to the right of the page, next to the globe icon and in a red box. This could be some other sort of notification, but if it is, I can't work out what it's notifying me about.

Bit of a case of the blind leading the blind here then. :-)
Looks like it's telling you about updates on your home page or whatever they're calling it.

It wouldn't take much for me to knock it on the head, but I do use it to keep in touch with a couple of people.
It's too "nosy" though somehow for me.

That's pretty much confirmed in the link Dave54 provided, (although they seemed a bit puzzled too), but I'll be damned if I can find these unread/new posts on my Home page.

I'll just ignore it in future, that usually works for me.

Clicking on the word home with the number next to it should bring up those unread posts.

Pretty sure I've tried that and not noticed anything new: I'll take a screenshot when it's blank and then compare it next time it's showing a number.

Ignore is what I do. :thumbleft:
What it seems to me is that it's desperately trying to get you to click on everything to see all the "important" new stuff that's mostly stuff you have no interest in. Friends of friends (that you don't know), saying about stuff that you're not interested in.
Facebook want you to be involved and see all that clever targeted advertising they have. Which I rarely even notice as I have an adblocker in my head.
As I said I went through the options yesterday and changed everything again to the least intrusive settings.
I always get the feeling with it all that they're being manipulative.

It's definitely a strange beast - it keeps coming up with lists of people that I might know, I've checked them out a couple of times and I've got no idea why Facebook thinks I ought to know them cos I don't, and I don't want to know them.

I've looked at my old school page a couple of times recently and I don't know any of them either, they're all too young.

I doubt I'll look on there much again until next August's Open Studio event, but I'll keep a check on our pottery page now and again. There again, if anyone on there needs to get in touch they'll email me anyway.

I'm beginning to realise why I abandoned it soon after signing up years ago when it started.

From what I can see the suggestions are just friends of friends.
The whole "Friends" thing is a nonsense really unless they are actually people you know. :dunno:
I had an invite for it very early on via a photography site I was using.
I didn't really get it then, and I don't now.
And Twitter seems pointless to me.
Old git syndrome probably!

I've had that "people you might know"thing too and most do seem to be friends of friends but scrolling through I've quite often found people suggested that no no tangible connection whatsoever , some aren't even in the same country or even continent.
I agree about twitter . When I first became self employed I was offered a short business course which both i and the other half went on ( free so why not) and on one occasion the lecturer tried to convince us of the use of twitter for business. Try as she could not one person on the course could see any practical use for it and trying to find a handyman , florist or cake maker didn't seem to be an easy task.

I've noticed a lot of various local groups (recommended by Facebook) for me to look at, many of them seem to be interested in local history, old photos of the area etc., that floats my boat a bit and so this made me think I should look and see if there was anything similar for close to where I was born, (and lived for roughly the first half of my life).

I found:-

Crouch End - Appreciation Society
The Real Crouch End Appreciation Society (two of those)
Not the Crouch End Appreciation Society
The Totally Cool Crouch End Society Where Anything Goes

A quick trawl through revealed that they were all at each others throats.

I decided I'd leave them to it.
