I want to extend the number of sockets in a home study. The room is 2.5m x 2.5m and has two double sockets, either side the doorway. I want to position 5 additional sockets around the room at a height just above desk height for plugging in printers, fax, phone power supplies, laptops etc.

I prefer to extend the ring rather than use spurs - besides the number of spurs would be limited to just two.

There is one feed into the room (2.5mmsq red/black/green), one feed out the room both being part of the first floor ring main. The ring within the room is completed by 2.5mmsq cable between the two existing sockets. All cabling is up through the floor and sockets are 300mm above floor.

I propose to break into the ring by removing the cable between the two existing sockets (or at least decommission that cable safely) and continue the ring through the 5 additional sockets. This will mean a vertical section up the wall to above desk height from the first existing socket, a horizontal section across and around three walls (looping into the 5 additional sockets) and finally a vertical section down to the existing 2nd socket to complete the ring.

I understand that because it is an existing ring and that it is neither bathroom nor kitchen the work is not notifiable under Part P. I intend to use metal strip to protect the cable and chase out the wall.

1. Can I have both horizontal and vertical routing as I have described?

2. New wiring should be latest colours even though the existing wiring is red/black. Correct?

3. Proposal requires no 30A Junction boxes. New section of ring to wire on from the existing sockets. This sound OK?

Thanks,

Ric

Sounds OK.

No it does not come under Part P as you are not adding a new circuit (and it is not in a speial location).

And, of course, all this work was done last May before the 17th Edition came into effect didn't it Wink (answer: yes it was)

Oh yes it does! Part P applies to electrical installations in dwellings and buildings associated with dwellings.

However, under part P Darkangel does not need to notify building control to undertake the proposed work.

As for the colour change — that occured a couple of years ago; well before the 17th.

Hi and thanks for the replies.

So Part P applies in any case. Period. But under Part P - because of the nature of the work - there is no need to notify. Correct?

So what difference does the 17th May make?

No-one has screamed "no" so I take it that the horizontal/vertical routing is within the regs.

Is there a preferred depth to chase out?

Thanks Ric

The term "Part P" tends to mean that the job needs to be filed with your LABC.

This job does not need filing under Part P. Stoday is correct in saying that all electrical work comes under Part P - which is a sort on a nonsensical in as a much as 'so what'.

The colour change took place about a year before Part P came into effect so yo have no problems there in regard to the 17th edition.
