I have a bmw 525d and get 44mpg urban and 57 mpg at 56mph steady i know these figures are correct due to german engineering and the fact when my wife drives it it registers 33mpg lol
You need to know how to drive to get these figures and i dont mean that to sound big headed but its true . 56mph is your optimuim engine speed that why all the hgv are limted to this also never go above 2000rpm , you have to build your speed up slowly use 5th in 30mph zones etc
Ps something to think on but i get better mpg from my beemer than my wife gets from her 3 cylinder 998cc corsa
Also with the prices the way they are i cant beleive the way some people still drive foot to the floor they are chucking money out of their window.
pps im not an old codger im in my mid thirties lmao _________________

Its a known fact that larger engines can do more MPG than a smaller one _________________ Scruff |

290 miles from a full tank about 45 ltr.
2 litre straight 4
But for that ......
0 - 60 - 5.8 sec.
248 BHP
.......... and the bonus - only room for 2 _________________ Jaeger.

Not yet - I need to remove a false plasterboard ceiling from my garage first so they can get access to the upper part of the outside wall (garage is attached with high pitched roof).
And there so much stuff in garage, I need to set aside two clear DRY days to get stuff out, remove boarding and then put stuff back
Def want to get this insulation in before end of Sept though _________________ I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"

Agree with some of what you say
Don't rely on the computer being right, mind - they very rarely are (even German ones!) - it IS identifiing that your wife is a nutter driver though You need to do 2 or 3 brim fills and do the calcuations to check against the OBC figures to check.
My OBC readout at best is 5 MPG out and at worst 9 MPG out - for the last 2 months of use, it is typically telling me I am getting 39-40MPG out of a tank - I am actually getting 31-32MPG. This inaccuracy is typical of most OBCs
For max economy (with reasonable progress down the road), you want to be driving at the lowest engine speed that your car comfortably does in its highest gear, which is not necessarily 56mph - that depends of the gearing of course
For a fairly large diesel like yours, 56mph -maybe that is 2,000 rpm or even less? that would be ideal. You do also say never go above 2,000 - remember for the typical petrol car, the gearing is 20mph per 1,000 rpm give or take 10% - which means 2,000rpm = 40MPH
For my car, I would get better economy driving at about 45mph then 56mph (I have used the cruise control to keep at steady speeds on a flat road and used the OBC to check the instant MPG to review the differences - I know the OBC is out, like I said, but it is giving me a comparision which is valid).
But driving at 40-45mph on a motorway or dual carriageway is madness to be honest as you will get cut up, tailgated etc and cause a major nuisence to other drivers, as well as take an age to get anywhere.
Personally, I am sticking to around the 60mph on M-Ways and Duals as that is giving me the best compromise for economy, progress and driving 'comfort'.
If I cruise at 70mph I can see from the OBC that economy drops by about 20% compared to 60mph
So to get the best economy and also drive safely on the road, I reckon 60mph is the speed to be at, as you will be not inthe position of having 38tonners up your arse and can smile at the guys tearing up the outside lane and ten miles later you will be sitting directly behind them at a set of lights.
Also engage Cruise Control if you have it (or maybe even Fit it if you have not) and use that to control your speed and acceleration - it does a much better job then a lead foot.
Don't tear up the gears and don't use the brakes hard, prepare for roundabouts BEFORE you get to them and you can sail though smoothly and probably overtake the idiots that got to them at 80 and had to slam on the brakes and don't even know what gear they are in! - read the road ahead!! - it is all common sense really.
My journey to the office is a 260 mile round trip and about 5 hours. Since driving the way I have described, I am getting about an extra 60-80 miles from a tank of petrol and the journey is taking maybe an extra 10 minutes each way.
(by the way - I know you are thinking 'he's telling us how he is driving economically and he is getting 32MPG - what pish!' - well, the Official Govt combined figures for my car is 32.1 MPG and I am getting .... 32.1MPG!) _________________ I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"

I have an automatic, you know the type, foot down and hang on
Point is I can do 30mph at 1800rpm or 50 at 1800rpm so which is the most economical. _________________ Scruff |

30mph at 1800rpm is more economical as you have less wind resistance. _________________ I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"

If it's diesel drive it hard in that...
every gear change should be an effort for the engine not at the top of its rev range like a petrol.
Diesels are more efficient when driven under 'load' poor when driven softly. _________________ Jaeger.

I do drive it hard don't have a say in the matter about which gear though.
I love the kick down when you wack the foot to the floor, and you have to hang on tight to avoid being thrown in the back seat.
I'd swop it for yours anyday if I could get init
Used to drive an MGB GT for years, brilliant motor. _________________ Scruff |

Oh you'd get in it!
MGB the the big wheel wasn't for looks but to turn the bugger without power steering _________________ Jaeger.

I doubt I would, I have problems with the legs.
The MGB GT was very light on the steering, trying to think, I thought it had power steering, I must get the book out, I know it had a 12" steering wheel.
Edit, no it didn't _________________ Scruff |
