I don't worry about fuel economy that much TBH - If I was commuting every day and racking up the miles, deffo I would, but I work from home, and if I do go to the office (ave once a month), I can claim (usually forget ) the miles back. I think if you enjoy driving (I do) and don't actually get to drive that much, you want to enjoy it.
The RAV is pretty nippy - I had the Honda HR-V which was a 1600cc part-time 4x4 but it didn't have the proper V-TEC engine and was only 105cc and slow up hills (so not great for Devon!!)
I am toying with a trade-in though... Like the Fiat Grande Puntos and quite fancy the 130bhp Diesel Sporting
Alternatively, maybe keep with the DIY theme and do a kit car... Time for a different thread, methinks _________________ I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"

wifes now got a skoda fabia, so a bit smaller than the scenic. It has a 1.9tdi engine (bigger and much quicker than scenic 1.5tdi), but is in the same insurance group and the same tax band.
It gets 48mpg (45 with scenic 1.5) at 85mph (this was over a 4 hr drive today) Mighty impressive mpg. Its rpm is 2800 at 85mph, and the scenics rpm was 3200 at 85mph.
The set up for lower speeds of between 30 and 40mph is going to be interesting, as on a short 10min steady 30mph run it returned 80mpg, and the rpm of the engine hardly goes higher than the idle speed at 30mph.
I have a feeling the engine will return 60-70mpg once the wife drives it to work every day in 30, 40 and 50 zones, and a bit of motorway as well. _________________ Go on, adopt a greyhound http://www.dgrescue.org.uk/ .......................................................................... |

Handyman, is the MPG you are quoting measured by you by checking miles and fuel bought, or are you going by a computer in the car?
the MPG just sounds too good to be true those trip computers can be very misleading - mine is out by about 20%
I can understand the bigger engine being more economical if you are cruising at 85mph as a 1.5 will be straining a bit.
getting 60-70mpg would be pretty astounding on a commuter run - normally need a Honda C70 moped for that
Sounds like a good result though _________________ I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"

its taken from the onboard computer, but set to the average on a set journey, not the actual reading.......as it can show 200mpg if your doing 85 downhill if you take it from the other reading
I will check the mpg against the computer at next fill, but then we need to use this tank, then can calculate.........this may be some time away
Its the way this car is set up for town driving, its incredible really. You drive at 30mph, and the rev counter doesn't go up from the idle ! this would normally mean you would be stalling or kangarooing along the road, but there's some clever stuff going on and it 'just' goes like this at 30. Its an odd feeling to drive it at first, then you get used to the fact the car is just set up this way (to be highly economical at 30mph) _________________ Go on, adopt a greyhound http://www.dgrescue.org.uk/ .......................................................................... |

52MPG i just dont believe it have you measured it or read the b*llocks they put in the sales bumpf |
I got a TD Ford Mondeo, does 50mpg easy, 45mpg fully loaded on motorway at 75.
Computer reads a bit high - 55mpg but calculations give 50mpg.
Lovely motor, goes like a bat out of hell too if you punt it!

thats the first tank used up........1/2 tank on 30/40/50 zones and hammered a bit by me and other 1/2 tank at 70 on motorway for 3hrs.
It used 41L of fuel and did 398 miles. Using this site http://www.geocities.com/mpgcalc/ it done 44mpg.
The computer showed 46mpg for the tank.
Will drive it more like a normal car for the next tank and see how it does. _________________ Go on, adopt a greyhound http://www.dgrescue.org.uk/ .......................................................................... |

if i dont drive it, it goes up to mid 50's
Its such a great wee car to drive (and has the bigger 16" alloys with low profile tyres) that its a bit of a waste not to boot it _________________ Go on, adopt a greyhound http://www.dgrescue.org.uk/ .......................................................................... |

engine (and my driving) is getting better............its been 56mpg on the computer for a good while now.
So lets say its 53mpg if i measured it again........not bad for a skoda
Although with the price difference in petrol/diesel, petrol engines must be getting close _________________ Go on, adopt a greyhound http://www.dgrescue.org.uk/ .......................................................................... |
