So painting today and I am supplied by the client the paint. I constantly suggest trade, but they brought retail dulux.

Not generally a problem, but just when I open the can.

WHOOOOSH!

The worst stench I have ever smelt. It was brought by the client last week and stored indoors. It looked ok, and felt okay after a little trial on the wall, but my oh my the smell was horrendous. It was somewhere between someone dropping their hat and rotting flesh.

I mean this paint was so bad the client, who had holed herself upstairs out of the way, came down and I instantly had to explain incase she thought it was me.

I spoke to ICI/DULUX/AKLOZNOBEL etc etc on their customer line and they blamed the retail shed for poor storage. I took it back to Homebase where the customer had brought it and exchanged it, without reciept, no problem (seems like some sheds are decent afterall). Homebase said they only store a few tins of each colour and only really have them for about a week at a time.

So who's fault was it? Bad batch? Bad storage? I don't think I'll ever know.

Anyone else had hideously smelly paint before and not oilbased as we all know that reeks.

No, but I had a hideously smelly assistant today (yes, you, Mrs d'Angler).

TBH i find anything that crown (vinyl matt, contract ) make if not used within a couple of months from purchase starts stinking of eggs, goes stinky a lot quicker than dulux gear IMO

I read somewhere that they have reduced the number of biocides in paint and so have to make it in 100% hygenic conditions, so either someone opened the can a while back and let some bacteria in or its really old.

Used to encounter this quite regularly with Hird Hastie emulsion, and I suspect it may be bacteria (as Puma suggested) getting in. Possibly a side effect of poor quality control/lid seals. It is a 'get the mask on' situation. It would go away once it dried though? :?

You'd have to be a pretty unaspirational bacterium to want to live inside a closed tin of paint, wouldn't you, when there are so many more interesting things to feed off. Like the things under teenagers' beds.

I have used Egyptian Cotton recently (both the matt emulsion and the mixed satinwood) and they were fine. Doubt it's anything to do with the colour, more the base for the reasons suggested above by others.
