Got an odd one for you - Garage conversion being done by another guy, he's just tacking up and (for some reason) I've been asked to come in to tape & skim - no probs so far.

However he won't do the ceiling because he says that as it is timber (sitting on nice solid joists) that the plasterboard will flex and tape & skim will crack.

Punter isn't fussed whether the ceiling is plastered or not as its going to be an office - but it'll be cold and look c**p

Is he talking b*******s, or am I missing something?

It depends on how far apart the joists are?

If they are too far apart then he could be correct. Noggins also should be installed where joints do not fall inline with the joists or joints accross the joists.

Bog standard 400 centres - seems OK to me.

Not overly concerned as punter is happy with the plan, just wanted to check in case there was something I could miss in the future.

Hi Aardvark,

Yes i think he's talking b******s aswell, you would be better off insulating, tacking and skimming the ceiling, you could add additional noggins if required but if the joists have been there a long time then i doubt there will be anymore movement.

My office/bedroom ceiling has 75 x 50 rafters. I fitted 50mm polystyrene foam between them, leaving a gap above, then plasterboarded and taped/skimmed. One or two cracks in 22 years, but nothing that bothers me.
