Hi. I live in a 1925 house with the original plaster in the lounge and dining room. The plaster is solid enough but the finish is not great so I want tapered edge plasterboard to be put over it and then have the joints filled. My question is how to get the old plaster ready to take the dot and dab - is it a case of just clearing any old paint from the plaster so it is a bare plaster ready for the dry wall adhesive?

Cheers

yes, loose flaking paint.
you could just pva it and re-skim.

I would but some bits have cracked due to age. the main sections of render are solid to the brick work but small sections are loose so I will dot and dab the boards to the solid sections and not bother with the loose ones. Tempted to try the tapered edge boards and try jointing them myself and then not have skim on top. Anybody think this is a bad or a good idea?

jointing is not as easy as it sounds to get a good finish, having tried it in the past i would always go for a skim finish, it will be as quick for a plasterer to do that as it will be for you to tape, fill and sand the joints.

I'd be chopping out the blown bits, wet down the bricks and old plaster edges, fill in flush with render, pva the lot the next day
and scriming any cracks an skim over the day after.

A good reputable plasterer came to have a look and recommended using dot and dab onto the good plaster and knocking the old stuff off if a key is needed in that part of the wall. I will go with this I think.

Cheers Thumbright
