|
|
|
Hi - we had new door knobs fitted and they are really hard to open, you need to have the strength of someone much stronger than me to cope!
As a way of trying to improve it, one of the springs was removed from the door knob, with the other one being left as it was - this seemed to work but now the handle has gone quite loose and basically it broke - the catch didn't seem to want to play anymore.
Before we break any more, any advice on how we can loosen them up. I don't really want to go to the expense of replacing them all to door handles but ....
Many thanks |

heeelllooo and welcome evie
try loosening the striking plate[the bit on the door frame] to rule out door movement problems
then get the person back who fitted them if thats not possible more help will come _________________ we are all ------------------still learning |

Thanks for the welcome and suggestion, unfortunately he's disappeared off the face of the earth
It's the actual mechanism of the door knob that seems to be a problem as it's on all of the doors, we would switch to handles but the dog is a master of opening those...
We took one of the springs out but this only seems to be a temporary measure as one has now broken - any suggested links to where else we could get 'quality' ones if we need to replace?? |

put a towel on the floor so the door cant close
try removing the handle one side and loosten the screws on the other side and see what happens
then remove the spindle and see how the handles work _________________ we are all ------------------still learning |

Evie
it sounds to me like the hole for the splindle is either on the pi$$ or to small for the spindle. .
take one side off and look to see if the spindle is skewed or catching on the hole anywhere! _________________ IF IT WERE EASY ITD B BORING! |

Put oil on all components! (not WD40 as this can cause serious damage!
By components I mean Back of door handle, inside the latch and also on the end of the latch (bit what goes in the striking plate)
The obvious problems have been mentioned above but a little lubrication will help solve the problem so your door furniture operates with ease _________________ Carpenter & Joiner Sheffield |
