Hi evryone!

I have 11 pairs of hinges on internal doors - fitted by a builder 6 years ago. They all exude graphite which gets on the dooor frame and particulatly on the carpet (wife :cb ). I have tried to find replacement hinges but to no avail. This leaves me two altenatives:

1 fit new hinges in a different position - my carpentry skills would not be up to this

2 wash out the graphite

item 2 sounds the best for me, so does anyone know the best way to get rid of this graphite?

many thanks

Ron :-P

Lubricate the hinges; it's not graphite it's the hinges wearing away.

Hi
Thanks for that reply; what is the black "gunge"; incidentally, two of the doors are very infrequently used.

many thanks

Ron

It is a mixture of oil and metal particles,
same as oil from your car when it's due for a change.

The squeaky hinge gets the oil...

... but they all need a bit of TLC :)

Hi all

Thanks for all your help; I have noted that the hinges least used have not spouted as much black gunge as the others. The hinges are non-ferrous - probably chromed brass?

I gave soaked a pair of hinges in WD40; this has cleaned out a lot of the black, and then applied drops of 3 in 1 oil. Perhaps I should nave soaked them in 3 in 1 after WD40

anyway the road ahead is clear, I can clean the carpets, and monitor the hinges in future.

many thanks
Ron :-)

I usually get mine changed every 5000 miles - 184000 on the clock now and still going well. :-)
