The motor would spin backwards if it didn't have a starting cap or pressure switch But......................................

That plug is just wrong apart from it being wired incorrectly, look where the brown is stripped back and the nicks in the neutral It could of gone bang or tripped a rcd - Worst case it could of killed someone

I'm not missing the point. It's just question.

The motor wouldn't spin backwards? AC doesn't work that way?

Maybe but it should certainly trip the rcd

It depends on the motor, most modern AC motors are multi phase (coil) induction types and use a large cap to phase 1 or 2 pair of coils

but as I said before you have a pressure switch that wont allow the reverse polarity

Not really. Take the same wiring to the continent, stick a schuko plug on it and live and neutral can be swapped (as the plug can be inserted in the socket either way).
