I'll drop the housing association an email about what happened and that I've been recommended to have the plug swapped over, I'm comfortable doing it, however they might be a bit antsy so we'll see what they say!

Show them the picture of the plug you removed. The live pin has got hot and is covered in some sort of melted crap BEYOND the insulated part of the pin. This IMHO will affect the socket and make the connection inside the socket unreliable even after a new plug is fitted.
