I've just moved in to a bungalow and the domestic hot water comes from a hot water tank.

When I ran a bath for the first two or three times, everything was ok. Plenty of clean hot water available.

Just recently though I have run hot water into the bath and it is a dirty brown colour. This has happened three consecutive times now and I am wondering what is causing it and how to fix it!

Any advice would be appreciated.

Ian.

Do you have a hot water cylinder with a tank in the loft?
Do you know what your hot and cold water pipes are made of copper or mild (galvanized) steel?

Yes, I have a hot water tank with a header tank in the loft.

All the pipes that I can see are copper.

What is the tanks and cylinder itself made of

Can tell us the water level in the header tank compared to the storage tank, which is highest.

Has the property been empty for some time.

Check the cold water tank in the loft to ensure it has a cover and that the water inside is clean. What are they made of. It has been known for the central heating expansion pipe to discharge into the cold water tank  so check that's not happening in your case. Some pics might help.

Thanks to everyone who offered help with this.

The problem seems to have cleared up on its own for the moment, water is clear and hot again?

I've got a plumber booked in for next week to take a look at the tanks and pipework. If there is anything that needs to be replaced/fixed I'll get it done and hopefully that will be it!

Regards to all of you who helped, it's much appreciated and it's good to know that there are people out there who will take the time to help someone out :) !
