I wasn't really sure where to put this...

Does anyone know what will happen to car radio's when the digital changeover happens? Will they still work? Or will I only be able to use the CD player?

Someone has said that I need to buy a new radio, but I'm not sure about this?! :dunno:

So does that mean that I'm able to listen to FM radio? Or is that different?

Chances are you'll need a new car before you need a new radio in it...there is a lot of information/misinformation about radio on the web...don't believe everything you read...Long wave FYI is amplitude modulated..(AM)

Not Frequency Modulated (FM)

I think...

Digital is different again...

Thanks Wine~O.... I'm not sure that I understand what any of that means! I wish I understood more about these kind of things, I just take it for granted that they'll be there!

The radio frequencies will still be transmitted as normal for a good while yet, i seem to recall 2015 being a suggested switchover date.

The Government had set a date for the change to digital radio (2015) but in the interim there have been worrying concerns that people have not been properly informed (as was done properly in the Digital TV upgrade) nor are they as prepared as they expected 'us' to be - car radios being a case in point.

Many complaints have revolved around the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' point of view - others are concerned with the lack of coverage - currently MUCH poorer than that of digital TV. Other concerns are for lack of equipment - AFFORDABLE equipment.

Either way there is currently (I think) a proposal to have the change-over date fall back somewhat. Whatever that will mean is anyones guess.

Either way, digital radio WILL happen eventually and if manufacturers don't offer a 'set top box' (dash top box) to convert digital signals to FM then you WILL be required to upgrade your car stereo accordingly. Newer models are already being rolled out with digital radio compatibility so 'some' manufacturers are aware of the up-coming changes.

The sale of digital radio sets has fallen so badly that even some digital radio stations are closing (6 Music and Asian Network) already due to lack of listeners! Somehow I think that mobile wi-fi will become the norm before digital radio takes over, in which case you will be able to chose whatever station you want, where ever you are.

As an exercise in intelligent thinking, the government (whichever one was responsible) certainly didn't think this one through. Estimates range from 20 to 100 million radios being junk after the change-over. Hardly 'green' don't you think?

It wont happen for years, and when it does I'm sure there will be some king of digital adaptor to convert your existing radio to Dab,just like buying a freeview box for older televisions

My digital radio ate batteries, they only lasted about 4 hrs. So I use it on mains only now.

Many DAB radios have poorer sound quality than a typical FM VHF set, so I won't be getting one in a hurry. Most of the ones I've seen do not have an external aerial socket, so no good where I live, in a stone house in a hollow.

I don't know why, but I was under the impression that DAB radios would have better sound quality and be able to pick up more channels?!

I thought that they picked up a signal from satelite, like digital tv?
