I don't know why, but I was under the impression that DAB radios would have better sound quality and be able to pick up more channels?!

I thought that they picked up a signal from satelite, like digital tv?

Wrong...Digital Tv can be received via a satellite dish, or via an Aerial, whilst you can get digital radio on your Tv...

Dab is broadcast in the same way as conventional radio, via a mast to your aerial...

Ooh... I really am a bit thick!!

If it's broadcast in the same way as conventional radio.... why do we need to change from the current situation?

Can you see why my dad has given up trying to explain anything to me.....!!!!

All radio waves (whether they are sound, pictures or data) require a form of 'coding' - the actual word for this is 'modulation' - and olde worlde radios used AM (amplitude modulation). Modern VHF uses FM Frequency Modulation etc etc.

Digital radio uses yet another format - if you want to know, ask, but it'll be waaaaay beyond your need-to-know  . Each signal requires its own decoder so you can hear it and standard radios have decoders for AM and FM signals but NOT the digital versions.

Thanks for explaining that, it's really helpful.

What I'd like to know... is why we need something new?! If the old radio waves are working well, why is there is a need for any change?

I'm not adverse to change, but I'd just like to understand it! :-)

Digitally encoded radio signals can be crammed more densely together without cross-talk/overlap. So you can transmit more rubbish, just like much satellite television.

I see.... so basically they're wanting the whole country to go through all of this change and incur costs, just because they want to be able to tramsit more radio stations!!! Craziness!!!!

If it was to enable radio signals for the police, ambulance service, fire service, coastguards etc... then I could understand. But just for more radio stations seems ridiculous!!

With the smaller bandwidth of digital radio you can, as mentioned, cram in more stations. Each station has to be licenced (i.e. hand over the loot) by the government. There are plans to have HD (high definition) radio on these digital services (probably by subscription i.e. fees).

The 'spare' space in the radio wavelengths on the VHF band will then actually be allocated to more 'local independent' radio stations (still transmitting on FM) and hence MORE licence fees.

Did someone mention money?

When they went for dab, and had a choice of 2 systems, they went for the basic rubbish system. Most of the time, the quality of the signal (bit rate) is less than FM . Its also ran out of space on all bands, hence the bit rate goes down to make space.

The last time I was reading about it (in private eye) it not upgradeable, and the radios sold have a fixed unchangeable basic format.

The signal strengths are poor, radios expensive, radios use too much power, personal radios are p*ss poor at picking up a signal, know one wants to spend cash on this system now, its a dead duck.

Its obvious now that they should have went for a national wifi type system, there its infinitely upgradable........... have something like a smart phone type radio, or just use smart phones as radios. (athough the tech wasnt ready for it at the time of launch)

Utter waste of money now, and the dates will just get pushed back and back, its never going to happen in its present state.
