Just watched the opera from the Royal Opera House on BBC 4.

Baroque opera by Purcell, one of the few with an English liberetto. Dido, the queen of Carthage, was sung by Sarah Connolly, who looks somewhat like our Bludell. There were two creepy witches, joined at the waist but who couldn't have been monozygotic Siamese twins because one was black and the other white.

This opera would suit anyone with a morbid and depressive disposition. Bludell — I mean Dido starts with a prolonged lament. Then along comes Æneas, so she falls for him. After a night sha- I mean spent with her, the gods call him to Troy where the Greeks are making trouble. Dido can't stand this and tops herself. The end. :cb

Big girls make good opera singers. Skinny girls ballet dancers.

Me — I enjoy both opera and ballet.
