Ni-cad and Nimh both have memory effect-

And it also looks like Li-ion are also damaged by part charging- or charging for prolonged periods of time.

I'll never pay extra for a Li-ion, I'd just get a Ni-cad or Nimh and replace it when it is knackered!

nicads are being fazed out
the way you use a lion is different in a power tool over a laptop also the chargers are more sophisticated and turn off when charged
when charged the usual practice is to pack away your powertool disconnecting from charger

also basing you veiws on lions on your laptop experience is like basing your opinions on deisel cars on the use off a deisel generator

Thats not true about Dewalt ni-cd batteries from the 1.25ah / 1.3ah / 1.7ah-USA only / 2ah / 2.4ah they all have no memory effect, and as for the 2.6ah & the now discontinued 3.0ah ni-mh batteries they also have no memory effect i personaly know that the 3.0ah ni-mh batterys haven't got a memory as i got both of mine 7yrs ago with my jigsaw all i do is drain mine as and when used and then charge for an hour its the same when i drain my 2ah ni-cd i just dont leave them on charge for more than an hour coz with just normal use you can screw up the ampage which is bad but i do drain them all as much as possible (like the chuck wont turn if you just touch it) every 2-3 months though then charge them up over 3 hours to recodition the cells & to stop the ampage from falling and screwing up the cell voltage. As for li-ion batteries if they get hot to much the cells get damaged beyond repair i dont see the point in buying them because you can only charge them 2000 times max thats it & you cannot recondition them like you can with dewalt ni-cd & ni-mh batteries & i think li-ion is only good with dewalts nail guns as it gives a constant power so you dont get half nailed nails like with ni-cd ni-mh batts also dewalt ni-cd & ni-mh batteries can be charged upto 3000 times before they need replacing or you can recondition them sometimes. As for other battery makes i can only say 15.6v 2.4ah ni-cd metabo batteries have no memory effect there both still going after 6yrs. I have 2 Bosch 14.4v 2.4ah batts & they'er still going after 2 yrs of abuse also. All other makes i have no clue as ive not used them.

the general consensus is all nicads have a memory effect now your monthly routine would certainly help towards reducing the effect
thats not to say all batteries will be equaly effected but your veiws are certainly different to mines lol
not saying i am right and you are wrong by the way just opposing veiws

A Li-ion battery is a Li-ion battery. I don't care if it is used in a powertool or a vibrator, they are marketed as being better than Ni-cad and Nimh batteries, which is clearly not the case!

As I keep saying, if they were so damn good they would come with better guarantees, wouldn't they!

Here you go big all you'll see no memory effect in the descriptions Dewalt 2ah ni-cd Dewalt ni-mh 2.6ah & you'll also see 3000 charges. I seen these batts quite abit cheaper also.

the trouble there is nicads ARE the standard batteries so not shure what the first refers to
i think the first link should be on the nmh batteries and the nmh belongs to lion batteries

also the description off lasting 50% longer are typical description for lions

i had to charge my 3 18 volt nicd batterys the other day. i own a dw997 drill.

i put the first battery on charge (yellow charger)

i tried to put the second on charge on my old drills charger (same drill as dw997 but 14.4v and black charger) it wouldnt fit.

14.4v battery model is de9091

charger (black) is de9107

seems there not completely backwards compatible with everything.

annoying like. but cheap enough for a spare yellow charger i guess

we will have to agree to dissagree because your perception of lions over nicads is very very different to my veiws

the tools and batteries are 95+% compatable
chargers by there nature cant be forward compatable non ever are

also. the 14.4v batterys i have work in the yellow charger. just that the newer 18 volt i have dont work (well dont fit) the older type charger even though they look the same

providing you get a charger the same time as the new battery then you are fully set to charge all your batteries that will fully power your old tools as will your old batteries fit the new tools
