Is that an external wall?

If it is, what's on the outside? Common causes:

- Blocked / missing / damaged / leaking guttering
- Damaged Drains
- Someone has built a swimming pool on the side of your house
- Leak from above soaking down the wall/cavity

Need lots more info/pics for more accurate suggestions - either way, I'd get it sorted!!!

Smart arse..........ohhhhhhhhh how stupid Simon felt when it turned out to be a window in to their canabis farm growroom and the damp was caused by the hydroponic setup, with a leaking airduct letting excess moisture escape!

We'll wait for the OP to confirm...... :huray:

Sorry Emma,

We do need a little bit more info before trying to help....It's obviously 2 external walls (Billy!), some outside pictures would help. Any water pipes running near by that you know of? What's the condition of the pointing like, any broken downpipes...etc, that sort of thing.

Don't worry too much Emma, I'm sure it's not major, as Billy (up for numpty of the month) says it's probably just something in the list he gave that's readily fixable!

The mould and flaking plaster was in the room before I moved in - the person living there previously had no heating for the entire winter period so the room would always be unbearably freezing. The mould isn't spreading anymore and the plaster isn't flaking now it has been properly heated - I was wondering how it could be best covered up? Would wall filler be adequate for skimming over the plaster and anti-mould paint for the black mould in the corner? I know nothing about DIY so I thought somebody on here might be able to help!

I've posted close up pictures of the black mould, flaking plaster and the corner of the drain directly outside of the black mould area - sorry I couldn't get a closer picture, as one of the pictures show there's about a 20 foot drop between my door and the drain!

Thanks a lot for your help so far!

Hi Emma :)

Have you looked the guttering when it's raining?

The heating will not have helped the situation, but you need to fix the cause before you cover up the symptoms.

Looking at your pictures (good shots!!), it could be water pouring out the corner down the wall - you can see the wall has been soaked where's it's black, which will have come through the wall - if it's still bad, no amount of coverup will help and might cause bigger problems later.

Is it possible you can go to a room above and look in it, or see when it's raining what is happening to that corner?

Regards,

BG

Hi Emma,
Strangely enough, I agree with Billy on this one. Although the heat is drying out the damp, you still need to rectify how it's getting damp in the first place.

The black mould can be treated with an anti-fungicide spray, if the plaster has dried out, it can be sanded, filled and re-painted, unless it has gone too far and needs re-skimming!

As BG says, first find the cause of the damp, treat it, then repair!
