Thanks guys! I'm on the top floor but have been up on the roof before - I can easily give it a look. My friend who lived in the room previous to the last one said the black mould had happened before and I vaguely remember him mentioning that the guy who came in to fix it unblocked the corner drain - we have a fair bit of problems with pigeons in this area, in particular they love to settle on the corner where the damp is, not sure if them crapping everywhere might be a cause but it's definitely something I'm going to look into.

I'd like to do as much as I can to fix this myself before having to call someone in, as most people will agree in the UK right now, money is tight!

Thanks ever so much for your advice :-) i'll have a look into it and post what I find..

Thanks for letting us know what's going on....we're nerdy and like to know what happens. Lots of people fly by and never let us know what caused stuff.

More than likely blocked drain again.....if it is blocked, get some spikes up or shoot the winged vermin!!!

The rest of it'll you'll be able to sort....SSM is on the case, full of sound advice....you're in good hands MwHAHAHAHAHAHhahaha ahem.

Hey!

Went up on the roof, as the picture shows of the actual gutter it doesn't look like its blocked.. while I was up there though I managed to get a few closer shots - as my friend pointed out though (I hadn't noticed), the roof next door is flooded with water, the roof is below the gutter though so I was in disbelief that this could be the damp problem? Where the roof hits my wall is about mid way up so it doesn't explain the mould in the corner, but I'll stop rambling and give you these photos and see what you think.

Thanks again for your interest :thumbright:

Hi Emma,

You can see the damp on the brickwork! Pour a bucket of water into the guttering and see if it leaks out and runs down the wall, also, some of the pointing needs attention by the look of it. Looking at the painted fascia below the gutter, that's where I'd say it's leaking! Or possibly the joint between the lead/felt, or even where the lead is chased into the brickwork.

It goes without saying that you and your friends be really careful on the roof!

This area of pointing looks decidedly iffy..
