Just purchased a new house that i knew has some Rising damp issues however i've now encountered some strange damp.

The damp appears to be localised to a few sections going up the stairs. The outside wall is a gable end and appears to have been repointed and it looks in good condition.

Whats the chances of something breching the cavity at this hight?

As the property has air bricks at the top and bottom of the external wall the cavity should be pretty well vented so it looks like there is something bridging the cavity at the points where the patches are on the inside.

A friend of mine who is a brick layer used to go around to new build houses and sort this type of thing out on a regular basis as something in the cavity would cause damp patches on the inside. The patches can be anywhere as it could be a piece of rubble that is lodged onto a wall tie etc.

He said that in some cases the actual debris in the cavity was not damp, but it made a cold patch on the inside of the property where condensation would collect.

Is it my imagination, or can damp external brickwork be seen along the line of the stairs?
Not sure what this is, might be worth drilling a few holes and hiring an endoscope to look inside the cavity?

Funnily enough I thought the same about the damp patch. When you look at the gable end it's not visible however on the photo it does appear to be there, coming down from the window.
