Help please!
Just been called back to look at a job which was perfect when I left it 2 weeks ago but is now looking shabby!
There are tiny hairline cracks in patches here there and everywhere, and I've no idea what's caused it.
The walls were papered, so I stripped, prepped and gave a white basecoat, sanded, then 2 coats of emulsion. The emulsion was a tub of magnolia I'd had on the van for roughly 2 years. It was Crown Trade and unopened, so I assumed it would be good still.
Is it the old paint does anyone know? Or have I missed some vital step?
I need to put the job right, but can't just re-coat without knowing what's happened incase it cracks again. Will cracking re-occur if I paint straight over it with a newer paint?
Advice appreciated! _________________ You're right, I do have paint in my hair. Thanks. |

When you stripped the paper off, did you wash the walls down with Sugar soap before you repainted? _________________ When I first met my Mr Right, I didnt realise his first name was Always. |

No I sanded off the old rough gluey patches, then wiped clean with wet cloth. The whole wall was sanded thoroughly as smooth as a babies' butt. _________________ You're right, I do have paint in my hair. Thanks. |

You have painted on old paste, and sorry to say didnt clean the walls well enough. Its a hard lesson to learn. _________________ "Where would we be without rules?

I would suggest giving it a good rub down and wash with sugar soap and then give it a coat of Zinsser shieldz and hope for the best. Or just line it to save on time, I am guessing that your going to have to take it on the chin?
Wish I could give you an easy solution but once that paste is a right mare, I had a job a couple of weeks back where the customer insisted on doing the strip and prep, so I made it clear that the walls had to be washed down forst with warm soapy water and then sugar soap and the same happened to her and your situation. She had to pay me to line the room as it was the quickest solution. Good luck. _________________ "Where would we be without rules?

I would have thought if the emulsion has been in the van for a couple of years, it was suffering from frost damage as well.
And no, I'm not a decorator. _________________ Scruff |

We have all learned that lesson, this is why its always best to wash down the paste residue with Sugar Soap, and rinse thouroughly.
Now you have the hairline cracks, which will still show through, you can rub them flat, or cut them and fill, and start again, or Line, thats the only way I know how to deal with them
I dont know what the Zinsser shieldz like as never used it, does it cover the hairline cracks? _________________ When I first met my Mr Right, I didnt realise his first name was Always. |

Nothing to do with the age of the paint Scruff, its a paste issue. _________________ "Where would we be without rules?
