Hi there

Can my electrician legally move my meter? also what sort of price would you expect, moving it no more than 1 metre.

Thanks

Heya,

Was speaking to a bloke about this the other day - depends on a number of factors, such as:

- condition of cable / age
- if the supply cable is being shorted or extended
- location

Only people that can do that is the DNO - not your sparky. Meters and board belong to them, no one else should be touching them. If I understand rightly, some of the works in contestable (i.e if you need to mount a box / dig a hole, you can do it - but dig carefully!!!! BOOOOOOOOOOOM).

I was told by the bloke to move through a floor that was up to the room next door between 500 - 2500 quid!!!! Guess it depends on the weather!

Sorry, but we electricians can't do this, the supply head (supply fuse, cable & meter) belongs to your DNO. Here in Yorkshire, Central Networks/YEDL (the local DNO) recently quoted my customer £850 +VAT to move a supply head up to a maximum of 5m on a job, a pretty typical cost in my experience.

Find your DNO (Distribution Network Operator) here;

You can't move the meter off the board it's on, you must move the entire supply head. With all due respect, he's an idiot! (and if you let him, so are you  ) For that reason, I'm out.

Don't do it, it'll end in tears, it's illegal to tamper with the meter connections or supply fuse AND he'll be working live with just the 60/80/100A supply fuse (at best) to "protect" him - he'll fry before that blows. After that there's nothing to save his sorry ass but a main supply fuse at the 11KV substation.

There's a reason they charge so much, they are highly trained professionals who are experienced at live working and have all the correct skills and PPE to do the job safely.

Why do you want to move it anyway?

Icdman

Moving it due to where it is becoming a toilet and its in the way..

The guy in question does actually do this for his daily job for EON, does this still make it an issue/problem he obviously trained and knows what he is doing?
Appreciate your view but please be aware i will not do anything that risks my family's life or anybody else's, if it is illegal i wont do it, if i get one mark against my name in the job i do i will be without a job, so it wont happen, rest assured, i will just pay up, no probs anyway, just trying to save a littel as i go
Thank you :salute:

Does he replace meters or is he a fully live certified line engineer? If the latter then he shouldn't be doing it alone - they work pairs in case anything goes wrong, notify their superiors where they're working etc. His employers WILL sack him if caught moonlighting - it breaks his contract and isn't safe. If he's just a meter replacer then he can't touch the supply cable or service fuse - he ain't qualified or certified.

You're opening a bag of worms mate.

I believe he is fully live certified line engineer, i will ensure all the advice you have given is followed, and if it aint, he wont be doing it.

Thanks

I'm not sure if this is of any help but in my little project the electric board was hanging off the wall from the place I was knocking down so I dragged it to an external toilet block (too keep it out of the elements). i had a letter off the electric suppliers saying they wanted to change the meter so when I showed it to him he said when I need to get it back into place just phone them and say it has fallen off the wall and they will do it free of charge -apparantly.
Anyway before xmas the same electrical supplier turned up to trim some trees that are close to the mains line (I'm on overhead mains) and the blokes looked at where I had put the electrtic meter and said they had to get the electric turned off in this area for them to work here (not sure if they were looking for an early finish for xmas)

can i just say as a meter installer anyone who changes a meter is also qualified to update tails and change supply fuses theres no inbetween man its called holding a mocopa permit to work certificate and every meter fitter as got one so whoever said the meter person cannot touch the supply fuse is wrong, but touching it as a bit of a on the side foreigner job would get him the sack anyway, supply authorities have a map of your metering equipment if it moved up the wall and anything happened in the future i.e. somebody like e.o.n had to repair a fault at your property they might enquire who moved it.
