Hi

I have a hole that had to be dug by the side of the house so the electricity company could move the cable. As you can see at the moment it is filled in with the left over rubble and is about 150x75cm. However, I am now fed up with looking at it and want to fill it in. However, I havent actually got any clue where to start having not done anything with concreting before i.e. how to prepare it and what material to use. Also I need to work round and leave a space for the air brick too.

Cheers in Advance

Andy

If I was doing it, I would clear out about 2" of rubble and compact it as much as possible, I would then miss concrete using 1 part cement to 5 - 6 parts ballast and water in a firm miz. I would use this to fill just below the level of the path and compact it with a piece of wood. Then I would mix up a batch of cement, 1 part cement to 4 parts sharp sand and water, in a slightly sloopy mix to finish off and give a nice smooth surface.

But I'm sure some pro's might disagree :-)

you cant really see it it is under that white bit of wood sticking out closest to 'you' in the pic, I made a kind of barrier so the dirt didn't all go in it

If its above the path, which it should be then whack a old piece of wood, card etc over it whilst you put the concrete down. It shouldnt splash if you careful.

sorry - last thing - to DIY craigs point

so if i do 1:5 cement to ballast how long should I then leave it before I do the 1:4 cement to sand finish?

also when i compress the 1:5 part with wood should i put some bricks or something on it or is this just initially to push the mix into the corners and down?

finally - should i cover it after being that i imagine it will rain within 24hrs of it being on?

cheers and thanks for the help
