Hi all,

Final under floor boards picture from my "lesson learned" post.

I should say the pipe is tied to the waste just to support the pipe. The pipe wasnt coming straight out the ground so there is a little tension in the position it is holding and I didnt want the compression fitting to be holding it all.

Next, as this is the mains inlet, its always cold. condensation is building up on the pipe and running down to the nut.

What material is best to lag the pipe with?
Should I silicon the top of the nut so water doest sit in it?

And advice, comments welcome.

First question why have you put ptfe on the thread, it ain't doing nothing.

By all wrap a couple of turns around the olive, but not the thread.

thanks, I was advised to do it but I see your point, when I have ever taken the nut off with ptfe on it, its ripped to shreds.
I put ptfe around the olive as well

At college they advised taping the thread when re-connecting old compression joints, but that it's not necessary on new fittings - is it a total waste of time then..?

Hi there,

Yes totally unecessary to put tape on the threads, it has NOTHING to do creating a watertight seal, that is done purley by the olive being squeezed by the nut.

When re-using an old olive & nut belt & braces would be tape round the olive, or as Scruff advocates joiting compound on the olive and a little on the threads to lubricate and make tightening easier.
