Depends what look your going for. But old railway sleepers or something similar would be good or you can get treated timber for outside/gardens.

The old style railway sleepers look great, but make sure they are the old originals. Some companies supply planed untreated timbers as sleepers, which look poor visually and have a short lifespan.

It's worth sourcing a supplier who will cut them to your requirements, unless you have a decent chain saw.

Some people don't like the old origionals because the are treated with tar and creosote and other toxic chemicals and have had years of train toilets being flushed on them. They are likely to last a lot longer though. Also I would not use a 'good' chainsaw on them. Blunt and ruin the blade in no time and won't cut with anything but a freshly sharpened blade.
