That's a right bugger! Sure you may not covered by ABTA? maybe some Travel Insurance policy?

sorry to hear this, thats a really rubbish situation.

I pay anything over £150 odd by credit card, then pay the cash into it, so you are covered for almost everything then.

If its a package, then you may well get your money back..........good luck

A useful Web Site, I think .... http://www.xl.com/

Some text from there ....

The following tour operators held Air Travel Organiser’s Licenses (ATOL) and customers that purchased air holidays and flights from them will be ATOL protected. Full details are on the Civil Aviation Authority's (CAA) ATOL website (www.atol.org.uk):

The Really Great Holiday Company PLC - ATOL 3827
Trading as: Cruise City, Excel Holidays, The Florida Skytrain, Transatlantic Vacations, Travel City Direct and Travel City International

Kosmar Villa Holidays PLC - ATOL 1760
Trading as: Kosmar Holidays

Freedom Flights Limited - ATOL 5296

Cheers for the info guys.

I feel really sorry for the ones who are stranded in airports or who were just about to fly out on their holiday.

The 3rd largest tour operator to fold. It doesn't look to good for the smaller operators.

I was listening to radio this morning and there was a travel consultant on saying if you want to buy a holiday at the moment, only use the two big guys, which is good advice in a way, but will hardly help the small guys stay in business :?

I have just had an email from Tesco Credit Card about XL (I have the card)

I assume these instructions will apply to anyone purchasing via CC. Hope it helps.

Recommendations to Tesco Credit Card customers who purchased XL Airlines tickets

Dear Customer,

As you may be aware, XL Leisure Group today announced it had been placed in administration.

If you have purchased a package deal or flights with XL Leisure Group using your Tesco Credit Card we recommend you take the following steps:-

1) If you have booked a flight or package deal with XL Leisure Group* in the UK via ATOL Tour operators
- You should make a claim through ATOL who can be contacted on 0207 637 24 44 or via their website at www.atol.org.uk

2) If you have booked a holiday through Medlife Hotels
- You should check your travel insurance policy as it may provide cover for accommodation failure.

3) If your flight is not covered by the ATOL arrangements and you paid for it using your Tesco Credit Card
- You may be entitled to a refund. Customers are advised to send a covering letter and a copy of all documents, including tickets if available to:

Tesco Credit Cards - Chargebacks & Disputes Department
Credit Card Centre
Thanet Grange
Westcliff on Sea
SS0 0EJ

Whilst we hope you have not been affected by this issue we hope by following the above advice we can help you through this uncertain time.

Yours sincerely

Paul Burgess
Head of Service

* The XL Leisure Group includes the following companies:

XL Leisure Group Plc, XL Airways UK Limited, Excel Aviation Limited, Explorer House Limited, Aspire Holidays Limited, Freedom Flights Limited, Freedom Flights (Aviation) Limited, The Really Great Holiday Company plc, Medlife Hotels Limited, Travel City Flights Limited, Kosmar Villa Holidays plc

Please Note: The French and German divisions of XL Leisure Group continue to operate as normal

yup - heard this the other day (mentioned by Martin Lewis on a discussion about Sultana PayTV rip-off terms)

the VISA organisation cover their Debit cards as well - I presume Switch/Meastro are not.

Like Rich, I always go for the Credit cards (easier to refuse to pay for a service not provided then try and claim your money back for one)

copied from another forum

There has been some confusion about credit/debit card refunds.
These bits of plastic might look similar but in reality they couldn't be more different.
If you paid by credit card then you bought your flight off the credit card company, NOT off XL. It is the credit card company who are out of pocket. If you haven't paid the bill yet just demand that they remove that charge from your next statement because they haven't provided what you've ordered. If you have paid, demand a refund.
There is no such legal obligation with debit cards. Visa have a "chargeback" scheme, totally voluntary, which is supposed to cover you. Whether the banks will honour it is anyone's guess. If there are thousands of customers demanding millions they may well decide not to. Maestro don't even have that. In law, paying by debit card is the same as if you paid by cash or cheque. You bought off XL and might need to join a long line of creditors.
