Hi guys, kinda basic question here so please be kind to me if it sounds daft !

Will be fitting a new radiator at the weekend and before I do so, I want to cleanse/flush out all the kak thats in there then fit an inhibitor when the job is done.

The How To on here states "Now you must ensure that the central heating is switched off! "

Some other forums say that the Gas and Leccy should be isolated from the boiler and some state as above (i.e. switched off).

Question for the experts - does "switched off" mean that I could get away with simply ensuring the controls are as it says (the heating off) or should the gas and leccy be isolated too

Again guys, apologies if the question sounds daft but the info on some of the other places has confused me a wee bit.

Any help appreciated

Cheers
Scooby

No need to touch the gas unless the boiler has a pilot.

It's always best to isolate electrically (pull the fuse) in case someone decides to turn it on when you're not looking.

If you turn the gas valve on the boiler off the worse you can do is burn the pump out.

Added the cleanser (Fernox F3) last night

When I drained the system, the water was absolutely boggin !

Going to drain and flush a couple more times tonight then add more cleanser then run the system until the weekend then fit the new radiator.

Will let you know how I get on

Thanks for the advice

Scooby

Personally I would fit the new rad and then leave cleaner in for at least a couple of weeks to do its job, running the heating for a couple of hours a day then flush it out. A good way of getting the loose stuff out now is to leave a drainoff open a turn or so (pref with a hose on it) whilst having the heating and boiler on. Make sure you clean out the header tank thoroughly.

Hopefully you are adding the cleaner when the system is empty and not just adding it to the header tank

Razor, done just as you said, new radiator now fitted and the cleanser added direct into the system when it was empty, the header tank is now spotless.

Will run it until I am ready to replace the floor, fit the shower tray, , do the tiling etc as it will need to come out again when this is being done (work away a fair bit so have limited time to do stuff). Should be doing this starting this weekend although will be away again for 10 days in Oct.

can feel a difference already in the heating although the old boiler had to be fixed again, it needs somethin done approx every 2 years !

thanks all of you for all the advice.

great wee place this :-)

I would recommend fitting a Magnaclean in the primary return to the boiler if possible.

gas4you, yep, thinking about that too

must admit though, until 2 weeks ago I had never even heard of a magnaclean, was only when looking at the how to's on here that I came across it !

the house will be getting a complete re-furb over the next 18 months including the radiators and boiler so will defo do it for then.

thanks again guys

cheers
