Hi all,

I've got one long room, (keep forgetting to measure, sorry).

The room has an rsj beam, which kinda of divides the room. The right of the beam is smaller the left side.

i want to paint the smaller section all classic red: http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav/skins/popups/scene7.jsp?skuId=9957311&initialFrame=2

The only natural light the right side has would be the back door, which eventually will have no light as currently the door has glass on both halves of the doors.
Would you recommend it? will get pictures later today.

You might want to use a large gilt framed mirror on it once done, it should have the effect of making the room feel larger. Thumbright

It's a good colour to hang gilt framed pictures on too..
Just wonder about chopping the room in half like that, would need to see pics.
If a room doesn't have good natural light give it great artificial light.

I've got a similar set up but my room is quite small - 4mx3m(ish)

I've used a similar red paint - Dulux Red Stallion 3 (mixed) - as a feature wall and a cream colour, again Dulux (The name is irrelevant as its been sourced from Ireland at a bargain price!).

TBH I'd pay the extra and buy Dulux rather than the watered down b&poo paint.

Just got to put the skirting on.

An all-red room, IMO, looks very dramatic and very opulent.

I did my Dining room in Red, with black skirting and Picturerail and we were very pleased with the effect.

One way to get some light into the room I used - but most of the Pro decorators here seem to dislike is to use a Silk finish.

Maybe some feature wall lights would be a good addition as well at the rear wall to help even out the lighting and shadows?

Just like any dark colour it shows every single blemish in the wall.

Hoovies last photo is typical. Sad Sad

Depends if the walls are 80 years old or not - houses age same as people - nothing wrong with that Rolling Eyes

Do it properly and you won't get Hoovies wrinkles etc.

Polished Plaster

Takes a bit longer than slapping a bit of paint around. Like a week... Laughing

Hi Cheeseandtoast, I love the red, but just do it on a accent wall, and have the other walls light, would set off any room.

Hoovie..... Love the hippo, we got three, a family, but they are all lying down (lazy bu55ers) lol

The impression I get is that this room is cut by the rsj so it might be difficult to get a feature wall unless it is the end one...it's so hard to imagine without pics but I imagine it looking like a red box at one end of the long room, could make the perspective rather strange...I'm not convinced but I haven't seen pics.
OK..now I have written a treatise on red...I got a bit carried away

I like this treatment of a similar colour only painting part of the room - this could pinch in a long room and make it shorter

if it was quite a defined division or you wanted to make it one then using a soft mushroom in the other area softens the contrast and changing the flooring will make it two definitely different living spaces

A bold red can raise the blood pressure, good for passion and animated conversation, but not for just chilling, so if you want it to be a relaxing part of the room, maybe think about darker tone, or a softer tone. You can soften it by using brown instead of black, mushroom instead of white, as contrasts; also pattern to break it helps

- large canvas patterned art works well but in fact lots of art works well on red ...only it can be stark..here is some more eye candy

Here is an example of a red feature end wall in a long room that I think works well, slightly orangy rather than pilar box, blue greys, mushrooms and browns making it soft, and well positioned abstracty artwork

OK I'm done
