|
|
|
Hello,
I live in an Edwardian terrace circa 1910.
I've noticed that the chimney breast in my front bedroom is about 6inches wider than the one in the room directly below it. Is this normal?
(I'm contemplating building a wardrobe into the alcoves of the upstairs room, and could do with the extra space if the breast has been artificially widened, say with plaster board etc ).
I could of course drill a few test holes to find out, but thought I'd ask whether this is normal first!
Thanks for your help,
Chris |

each chimnie has its own flue so the fire down stairs has to pass the up stairs fire somewhere!!!! _________________ we are all ------------------still learning |

yes this is normal your flue probably turns as is normally the case and the breast has been built to compensate for this _________________ What was the best thing before sliced bread? |

Thanks for your comments.
However, I've just measured the chimney breasts in the back bedroom and corresponding downstairs room and discovered that the breast is narrower upstairs! Confusing !
Maybe I should pluck up the courage to ask my neighbour (who I don't know very well) if she can let me know her breast measurements!!

You also mentioned a test drilling?

another though
if its on a party wall and what your saying is the face off the stack is farther out from the wall on one side than the other by quite a lot perhaps 18"plus
this can be quite normal as the space on each side off the stack is full depth is dedicated to the different houses
in other words the cupboard/space extends slightly into your neibours on the one side and your nabours cupboard extends onto your property
this gives you both a large usefull space instead of 2 smaller spaces _________________ we are all ------------------still learning |
