I have just encountered this problem having to drain down the system to fit a faulty valve on a rad, I have central heating but no water although a few upstairs rads get hot when just hot water used.
Do I need to undo the heat exchanger pipes to the cylinder to get rid of an air lock? after draining down the system again?
The heat exchanger is fed from a glow-warm back boiler. |

just be very careful, as you could crack the water connection, on the cylinder. _________________ www.hintonheating.com

| ok I am more savey now, I have back boiler with a primatic cylinder.Ch is fine but on hw alone a few rads get hot not the HW cylinder. have i lost the air bubble? you might say change the whole system but before going there can I rescue what I have. should I backfill the whole system to clear any air locks or trapped sludge in the primatic cylinder or gravity feed pipes to it. Surely just draining down and refilling a working system cannot make it beyond repair.Any one who has knowledge of these sytems help! please will try anything before scrapping the lot. |

| I,ve solved it by backfilling from the drain cock any air lock in the gravity fed pipe from the boiler was removed and now my old system works just as before. Many plumbers tried to get me to install a modern day system but It would take a while to get back £2,500 to change to a new system. I reckon 10 years. again thanks |
