I recently finished a garden project which included building a castle. It's for a 4 year old boy but he will grow into it (and no doubt someday he will use it as a den for smoking and being all emo.) In the meantime he has a fully functioning castle with authentic medieval multicoloured LEDs in the floor which respond to sound.

As well as building the castle I laid stone paving around the house, moved the greenhouse, constructed an elevated deck, built a store and added a few walls.

More pics of the garden can be found here : www.philgeddes.co.uk/v1.html

Magic.

He'll always have plenty of mates around.

Just think of the chat up lines he will have when he starts inviting the young Juliets home. Wink

Just before the DNA testing kits come into play, I should clear up any misunderstanding about my professional working relationship with my clients. Smile

The 4 year old I mentioned is the son of the owners of the property and I was the designer and builder for their garden works. I am sure he will be very proud of his father but not for building his castle, just for financing it.

I have certain morals when it comes to fathering children with clients and I try not to do it 4 years in advance of the start of a project. For one thing it makes it a nightmare for scheduling.

Why can't garden sheds be more like that? I'd love a bigger version! It's great and looks really solid.

I tend to over engineer things when I build. It's because I am building a one-off and I can afford to spend a bit extra on materials when the labour is such a big cost anyway.

Mass produced sheds are built with the slavery of economics and have to be produced with material costs shaved to the bone. An extra 2 inches on beams in a one-off shed adds a tenner to the final bill. The same extravagance on a line of 300 sheds adds £3000 which could make someone unemployed.

Personally, I think you should build the shed you want yourself because it sounds as though you would like one that isn't available. :)

I would be happy to offer any advice I can on designing, costing and building your dream shed and I'm sure there would be plenty of advice from others here.

Here's a video of a an old shed which was about to be torn down which I resurrected. It shows how, with a little bit of imagination, you can get quite a lot from just a little and it doesn't need to look cheap.

Geewizz

Thanks for the offer but my dad has had a successful landscape garden design company for the last 44 years, I used to help him as a child and teenager, so I've done my share of hard labour! If I had the room for one I'm sure he'd give me some advice, if not give me some materials. He did Chelsea a few years running and got Golds for the gardens. Have you ever been? Looks like you'd have some great ideas, may be worth a look at it. Thumbright

When our Wendy house finally falls down and we need a new bunny house I may just build something more interesting. Laughing

This may interest you, my dad has an original 1860 Summerhouse on his property.

I've yet to visit Chelsea, though I've been to Hampton Court and worked on several show gardens for the Scottish RHS show (never did better than silver.) I'm moving south at the end of this year so I'll hopefully be at the next Chelsea show as a spectator.

I'm certainly interested in your Dad's old summerhouse! You wouldn't happen to have any pictures to share, would you? :)

edit : Yes, it seems you do. :D

That is absolutely gorgeous!
