met up with a friends dad earlier today & we got round to discussing cars, mentioned the wife's new car was half the road tax of the old one & he pointed at his ford focus & said it was £240 a year because it was an automatic, apparently if it was a manual box it would be £150, first time I had heard there was a difference

Only because of the auto box kicking out more co2, it must be in a higher band..... or is it old?

Think Hitch is on the right track..I drive a 1.6 focus, manual..mrs drives a renault 1.6 auto..her tax costs loads more than mine..something to do with cO or CO2 and stuff.....

Yes it is to do with CO2 emissions. Mrs C's diesel Fiesta costs £20 per year, my Kuga diesel costs £165 per year, both of these are manual.

Automatics generally have higher CO2 emissions.

Have a look at the V5 (Log book in old money) it'll give details of CO emmissions on there..

I wonder why cans of beer and pop arnt taxed the same way,I read the other day that coke sell 2.5 billion every year how much Co2 is that every time the ring pull is released :lol:

Hey you just invented a new flavour imagine when you pull the ring you get a wiff of 2 stroke, whoooo.I have a scented candle oil burner and use Castrol R as the scented oil :thumbright:

I Drive a Mondeo 1.6 Diesel Econetic £0.00 Road Tax, 70ish mpg on a run, 55ish in town.
