Quite right on the lenses - you go over a certain size and you get into very serious money
I am not a serious photographer so a camera like the K100D is good enough for me. My 70-300 is a budget model (Tamron) but I don't think I would see the difference enough compared to a premium one myself.
If you use a 600mm lens would you HAVE to use a support to avoid shake? I have a pair of Nikon Eagleview binoculars with a 8-24x Zoom and on the greater Zoom setting it is very hard to get a stable view without support my hands against something.

with a 600mm i would use a monopod, you can see the connection for it on this link. Basically its a walking stick with a screw on the top
http://www.jessops.com/Products/ProductDetail.aspx?SkuId=17631
Thats what you see the photographers using at the football, so i think I'd copy them
All is is presuming i will have a 600mm lens, which will be never

I had a Canon 400D with Canon 18-55, 80-200 lens and a Sigma 70-300 lens, separate Cobra flash and 3 batteries for my Birthday.
Choose Canon as we have a Canon EOS 5000 Film camera and bits from this fits the new one.
So far I'm very happy, was taking photo's of Granddaughter in woods near us and came across Bambi, try keeping a 3 year old quiet to sneak up closer, got a few pi'cs of said Bambi leaping off.
The wife was surprised it was there as the woods are only 2-3 acres and between a busy road and an industrial estate by the M27.

nice one, you'll love it.
Was at a wedding at he weekend, and it copes very well with dark dance floor type shots. Balanced flash in very difficult lighting

Handy those F1 pics are really cool mate; so much detail and the colours are excellent! have they been enhanced using photoshop or similar?
thats one hell of a camera....
the thing i find cameras struggle with (perhaps its not the case with the DSLR's etc) is pics at home with the lighting on; say B'day pics and stuff like that. outside they're brill but most of my snaps at home are average; ocassionaly i might get a really good one if i fluke it somehow.
