Had a new kichen fitted a year ago, all pumbing under sink was done with push fit fittings.

Me and my family were just sitting relaxing last night and suddenly heard a whooshing sound from the kitchen, I ran in to find water flooding from under my sink. Turned off the water to find that one of the push fit elbow joints had just come off the end of the pipe!!!!

My question is, how is this possible??

I pushed the fitting back on, just as a temp, and went to B&Q to buy a replacement, I then went to fit it and now cannot remove the faulty one!!!!

I have obviously lost confidence in this elbow joint, should I still try to replace it or am I just being paranoid??

Thanks in advance for any help!!

Push fit fittings do that

They are easy to get off, depending on make/model, and you would be better to replace with compression fittings.

If it is a grey Hep20 fitting these are not demountable.

If a speedfit, make sure you are pulling the locking ring tight against the fitting body when trying to remove.

Undo the big grey nut, pull the plastic spacer and o ring off, wobble the gripper ring off, remove the big nut and bin.

Hi, thanks all for advice.

It is not speedfit or hep20 (Although some are hep20) The elbow joint is a QPB-FIT (Qualfit) made in Ireland (It took some finding via GOOGLE!!!).

It seems like I may need a removal tool?

can you just cut the pipe close to the fitting, and then fit a compression elbow, dont forget to use an insert liner.

Thats not a great make, have heard of quite a few probs with these compared to say JG or Hep20.

Sounds like you have a mix of makes and pipes no manufacturer recommends this although there isn't much in the way of clear evidence to say it contributes to failure.

Most important to use a proper cutter for the pipe and the correct insert for the type of fitting.

If compression use copper olives instead of brass and get a decent fitting such as conex which have a good depth to insert the pipe into.

I only ever use speedfit to be honest.

I have a friend who bought some own make ones from B&Q and they leaked all over the place.

The pushfit connector was not connected to a chrome pipe was it?

hello looks like im a noob here first post like
anyway plastic push fit pipe !! it quick that’s the best thing about it
iv used loads of different brands the best one of all was the osma gold
but that been bought out by hep i think so you cant get it any more
i do a lot of new build work and we use it all the time (its what the builders spes) after we complete a first fix we loop all pipe work in airing cupboard and blank ends of and pressurise the pipe work with water to 18 bar,iv seen tested installations have fitting blow off under the floor up to 12 months after the house has been handed over to the customer
as for using a compression fitting of plastic pipe you can but be sure to use a support sleeve in the pipe but TBH i wouldn’t use comp on plastic iv heard they do tend to creep off the pipe after some
