Hi

I am restoring a listed building, the wall are 150 years old with the original plaster which is looking quite grainy and needs patching throughout.

I am thinking of re-skimming some walls with lime, is this possible and are there any pitfalls or prep-work that I should be doing.

Thanks for reading.

Is it dusty and crumbling off or just patchy?

I think if you are going over old stuff and it's falling apart, you might need to stabalise it first.

I would wait for the pros on that question.

If it's listed it may have to go back in Lime putty or whatever was used originally.

Are English Heritage involved.

I need listed planing and have to use a lime mix. I is mostly sound but not good enough to get away with painting, apart from two walls that I had to take back down to the stone.

I am not sure if it will stick and stay stuck if I just put another coat on.

The training for English Heritage must take about 20 seconds because they just teach them to say NO to what ever you say. :B

Instead of telling them what you want to do, ask them to suggest a method and material.

lime and horse hair should be ok if that's what original.

Thanks Scuff
I have the lime putty mix and because it is the same as what's on now they are ok with that, but can anyone tell me if I can skim over the finish plaster that is already on given that it is mostly sound? or do I need to scratch a key; pva is a no no because it iwill not breath through it.
