Hi,
I want to run a cable from the house to a shed about 25m down the garden. Do I need any special cable (Artic or anything else) or can I get standard 3 core cable.

I was just thinking of running the cable under the paving stones to the shed. Is that ok?

Where is the cheapest place to get the cable from?

Thanks in advance,

No you MUST not use artic!

Yes 'anything else' is what you want it is called Steel Wire Armoured cable (SWA) and the one I have used in the analysis is the XPLE type.

You probably need 3-core and unless you are familiar with making the ends off (of SWA) thne don't bother doing it yourself. The installation must have high integrity and waterproof.

Assuming 6kW consumption peak at the shed (you do not mention expected loadings, the analysis results are as follows -

Required Cable Size 4 mm
Voltage Drop 6.52 Volts.
Percentage Drop 2.8%
Current Load 26.0 Amps

That 4 mm is a MINIMUM, I would actually use 6 mm.

Now -

1. What type of earthing arrangement is at the house (TN-S, TN-C-S/PME or TT)?

2. Where are you proposing to install the RCD protective device?

3. You are aware that this work comes under the building regulations? I trust and that you have applied to your local council before proceeding.

How odd...

The glands don't 'come with' SWA you buy them separately and for external use you require CW 20mm.

So you know it (SWA) needs glands then, what made you think Artic flex would do the job then?
