Advanced apology for the somewhat dumb question

I am having a new electric hob and oven fitted as part of a kitchen re-fit. The total power requirement for the two units will be around 10kw.

I have looked at the internet etc as to the size of the cable needed for two units and they mention that it will be need to be 16mm or so. I assume it does not mean diameter of the cable that would be huge!

What exactly does this size mean ?

Depending on the Kw rating of the oven, it may be possible to run the oven from a 13 A ring, and the Hob from a Radial.

If running both from the same cable, I'd suggest 10mm csa, as 6mm will not allow for a great margin of safety.

The cable size refers to the 'cross-sectional area' of the individual cores. In other words the 'area' of a circle. A 16mm cable has an individual core diameter of 'about' 4mm.... plus more for the core covering and again some more for the sleeving. It ends up about 12mm x 6mm (oval shaped) for twin+earth.
