Hi,

Is it permissible to run T&E cables on the top side of a plaster ceiling without clipping to the joists? They will be protected by an RCD.

...Thanks for that. Yes, of course to clip it means dismantling the floor to get at the joists.

Could you point me to the regulation that says the cables have to be clipped please?

I can but not right now as I don't have the regs with me they are at home.

Cables should not be left un-supported for more than 1 meter, which is another reason why it is bad practice and against the regs to drop cables down cavities.

If I recall the clipping should be every 200 mm.

When it comes to lofts most sparkys leave cables unclipped, does not make it right but it is a LOT more convenient when it comes to things like the installation of rockwool and when boarding out loft spaces.

522.8.4 and 522.8.5 (17th) applies.
