Quote: A builder took a sledghammer to a customer's porch and conservatory after she failed to pay him.
Nigel Gray was owed £22,000 for the work but reached the end of his tether after a string of excuses and missed deadlines for payment.
So he took an 18lb sledgehammer to the red-brick porch, complete with its red-tiled roof, in Shoreham, West Sussex.
He also removed the large back garden conservatory, window pane by window pane, and then went back for the French doors.
Father-of-four Mr Gray said: "I'm absolutely gutted to have had to have done this because it was such fantastic handiwork but I could not just let this go.
"We just kept on getting a string of excuses and bounced cheques. One time I was told her husband had died, but when I spoke to her son he knew nothing about any death.
"It was getting ridiculous and after a number of cheques had bounced and after being given the run around for so long, we decided we had to take drastic action."
Good for him!

You have to be careful doing things like this and it would not surprise me if she could sue him.

I get the idea that he acted first and thought later! I feel sorry for the builder though, that's too much money to be out of pocket.

On our local ITV news tonight they said that the council was in the process or recovering the costs from the tenant, for the removal of the remaining rubble.
I recently had some plumbing work done and the quotation stated that all of the fitted items remained their property until the account was paid in full!
Quite right too

The builder had backing from the police and the council!

Its just down the road from me, and I think she owed the money from before Christmas time. The whole episode is a bloody joke as its a council house in which she is a tenant. But what makes me laugh is the mentality of the woman by trying to carry out these improvements on a house she dosnt own especially when she couldn't pay for them. I feel sorry for the firm they have a pretty good reputation round here for quality and getting the job done, its that sort of customer that could easily put you out of business. I think we should have a national web site from rouge customers.

Bloody well done, just shows there are probably more bad customers than tradesmen yet the latter get picked on more times.
My gas fitter went bankrupt as he had to spend more time chasing bad payers than doing work, now he's back on his own, small jobs, pay upfront, those he trusts and knows, pay on completion.
