Above is another example of my PC skills,
clicked on the Embarrassed smiley, changed my mind and clicked on the Bang Head smiley, and somehow ended up with the Moony smiley.
Now checking all e-mails sent to talktalk in case I have insulted them

Nothing wrong with those figs...try the test at different times of day, particularly at times when you notice a problem and report back...

In the meantime delete temporary internet files, clear cookies and clear the cache...see if that speeds things up a bit..

BG,

It has been happening every day on and off for the last few weeks, just tried to log onto talktalk three times no joy, got onto UHM on the third attempt, not a major problem for me but my Daughter uses the Internet every day and cannot afford the time to keep trying all the sites several times, also she told me that if she is halfway through some research and it kicks her out she looses all that work.

Wine-o,
Thanks for the advice, but you might as well have written it in Arabic  when I say my knowledge is limited, I know how to switch it on check my e-mails (when it's working) and log onto UHM,Amazon etc,

Blakey, can you do this for me......

Click on Start and in the search box, type CMD and press enter/return. It will open a window like this:

Attachment:
blake1.JPG
blake1.JPG [ 29.59 KiB | Viewed 1250 times ]

In this window, type the following:

Code:
ping -t 173.194.66.147

Press enter. It will look like this:

Attachment:
blake2.JPG

It will keep going up the screen, again and again - the time might change.

leave it open and browse/do as you normally do. When it goes wrong and your webpage doesn't open, close the web page as soon as possible, so you can see the cmd window......click on the top left part of the window: here

Then click the same top right, edit > copy.

Then come back to this post, right click in the space here (where you write your message) and click paste!

Then post the message for me - if you want to message it, you can - it won't reveal anything private (other than your computer account name, mine is bob).

To add to the above, the speed tests WILL vary by day - it's going to be slower when people/kids come home from work. This will more than likely go up when people go to bed.

What the above is doing is sending an 'OI!' to a google server, nothing harmful. The response back is the time it takes to reply and that it's working.

If this continues when your webpages stop working, I have a good suspicion of what the issue is.

If it errors, goes way high, then it gives us another path to follow.

The numbers don't reveal anything secret....it's like a door number, every internet address has one hiding behind the friendly name (www.google.com is that number address and MUCH easier to remember  )

Enjoy!

Cracking stuff - does the message happen straight away or does it take 2/3 seconds for it to come up....likes it's thinking?

Depending on that, I have a suggestion, but may need to pen it tommorrow - about to join 3 hours of conference calls :cb

Morning!

The delay ties in with the results above, the delay to your connection where it reports 2/3 seconds - but the connection was not lost, as the response to the ping continued.

If it was an connectivity issue, I'd expect some 'no response' lines in there too, while it sorts itself out.

Need some more stats, but might be worth giving this a go in the meantime.

Whenever you hit a website, it changes the name to a number, like above - I'm reading lots about talktalk's DNS server being shite across the board (amoungst other problems). try these alternative servers for another test, just to rule it out - after that, it'll more than likely be a trouble ticket with talk talk.

If you can follow this:

1.Click the Start button, then select Control Panel.
2.Click on Network and Sharing Center.
3.Click on your primary connection or Local Area Connection under Active Networks.
4.Click the Properties button.
Windows 7 may prompt you for permission to make network setting changes.
5.Highlight 'Internet Protocol Version 4' and click Properties.
6.Click the radio button 'Use the following DNS server addresses:' and type 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 in the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server fields.
7.Click OK button, then the Close button, then Close again. Finally, close the Network and Sharing Center window.

Suggest a restart of your computer and try browsing again - it's now going to look up pages using OPENDNS servers to test.

Thanks once again BG for taking the time.

Managed to do the above eventually , I have logged onto 5/6 sites including the talktalk upgrade site that I could not get onto before, and at the moment they are taking 2/3 seconds and they are open.
Excuse ignorance, but would my daughter need to do anything with her computer to make it work the same?, is what I have done a temp fix or should it be ok now :dunno:
