Hi Guys, great forum!

I recently moved into a new house. It has a old school central heating system that works brilliantly but has a mind of its own. I'm at work at the moment so dont have any model numbers etc, but the system isnt a pressurised system. It has 2 tanks.

My problem is: From cold the bolier fires up, warms the house nicely, but when its warm the boiler will switch off for about 2 mins, then fire up again for about 30 secs, then go off again, does this all the time its on etc.

This obviously isnt very good and I dont suppose its doing the boiler any good either.

Any ideas?

My first thought was the thermostat. The system doesnt have any rad thermostats its all done by a very old looking stat in the living room. I've bled all the radiators recenly as there was some air rushing about.

It will need a service.

But the symptoms sound like some temperature monitors are goosed, an engineer will investigate the symptoms better than I can, Hinton Heating will be on later.

I'd say return temperature sensor isn't working and the boiler is monitoring the temp.

seems the boiler stat may need replacing...

But it is quite common for old boilers to cycle on & off, once the system is up to temperture.

Modern boilers have anti-cyling devices built on the the PCB, because of this situation in old boilers.

thanks guys,

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I should have had the vendors service it before we exchanged. Lesson learned.
