...and this time it's not the flatulence kind it's the 'real thing'. FIVE times we've been cut off from electricity since last May. Trees mainly being the culprits. Of course we're not the only ones but, inevitably we're one of the last to get RE-connected.
I bought a 'basic' genny (850W) about 6 years ago and it's been a godsend these last two - saved our freezer contents twice in the last six months.
Plans to fit a more robust genny on a permanent basis are thwarted by lack of cash (usual story  ) and even standby batteries/inverter are all still 'work in progress'.

EVERY damn time we get cut off I go on about 'fixing it for next time' and every time I fall for the next storm outage ::b

Anyone else having power problems?

It's windy here but not as bad as some parts of the country.

The main problem is trying to sleep with the wind howling through the vents in the chimneys.

Lights flickered yesterday so I shut computer down to be on safe side

been windy here but no power problems. i was mightily peeved yesterday though as i spent most of the day phoning round my friends to organise our weekly game of football. only to have most of em say they would be watching the sunderland game. and that it was too windy. but since they only told me on the day i had to pay for the pitch hire. :cussing: :cussing: :angryfire: :angryfire:

on the plus side we might have a huge ass garden wall to rebuild after a tree decided it wanted to squash part of it and leave the rest leaning at a dodgy angle.

We're heading into our second night (3rd day) without power. Tried to start the genny to boost the freezer this morning only for the pull chord to break :angryfire: ::b

Ended up getting it started using a 14mm socket (1/2" drive) spun with a battery drill (won in a previous UHM competition :huray: ) and fitted with a filed-down 13mm wood drill bit to fit in the socket drive end...... talk about jury-rigged!!!

Mind, first time the genny started the flywheel nut unscrewed and I had to shut it off immediately in case the flywheel followed it! Just back from a 1 hour expedition past fallen trees and flooded roads to get some extra fuel for it too - and the wind is starting to get up again...... ::b

Still, I've got the lappy working, a small TV and freesat (to keep Mrs happy)

Not just up north Wine~o, my sister had no power from 10:30 yesterday morning until 06:45 today and she lives within 5 miles of you.

But I've managed to pick up a few fencing jobs so I'm not complaining :huray:

Dave - what do you need to get UPS's working/sorted? Do you just need the control boards or the batteries too?

Reminded me of these I have downstairs - two of. Any use? Batteries don't work (and would cost a billion to ship too), so could take 'em out if you needed the rest?

Heard of people using them with gel/car batts?

Surely no tradesman worth his salt would use Metaposts, that's scandalous.

@ BG - my plan was to use an old UPS of around 750VA to 1kVA of UPS to allow for a decent safety margin. If your UPS units are around this rating I would be chuffed to use them - battery-less units are ideal as my F-in-Law has some spare deep-discharge batteries I can have.

Last company I worked for had 2 of those to run the servers in case of a power outage. At least it gave them enough time to shut them down properly.
