Hi,
Problem as follows;
Downstairs toilet frequently has loud 'gurgling' sound at u-bend in drain, as if air is trapped in outlet.
Also, when flushing, it sometimes fills up to near top of bowl, before water level slowly drops, sometimes really low until hardly any water in bottom.
But it always flushes away, and inspection pit outside is clear.

Do I have a blockage in my drains ? Or any other problem?

Any help appreciated, thanks.
Tony

Sounds like you might have a syphonic rather than a wash-down WC. They are double-trapped.

When flushed, a syphonic will increase the water level in the pan until the syphon starts. Then the syphon sucks the water and other matter into the soil pipe instead of washing it into the pipe. The sucking will drop the water level below the first trap; that's why you have a second trap to maintain a seal from the sewer.

It should handle floaters, which a washdown has problems with.

The water level in the WC is generallly higher than in the wash-down. That reduces the splashing when you drop a turd.

Regrettably, syphonic WCs are no longer available because they won't work with a 6 litre flush that is now a building regulation requirement.

I agree with Stoday and a pic showing the side of the pan would confirm.

Thanks for that info, I'll get a pic sorted so you can confirm I have a syphonic.
If I have, I presume from the strange goings on that it's now not working correctly ?
Is there a cure, can I fix it ?
Thanks again, as the gurgling & banging at 3am is now quite annoying !!
