Give us some details about your system. Do you have a combi or conventional boiler. Is it a sealed system with a pressure gauge, or do you have a small tank in the loft? Do you have a hot water cylinder.
The more info you can give us the better. :-)

No pressure gauge
It's a hot water tank with an immersion.
The boiler is a BAXI BERMUDA BACK BOILER, combi I think
It's either on or off, i.e. no room thermostat

Meant to ask...how long have you been bleeding the rads weekly?

Any sign of pinholing in the rads or pipework??

I've been in the house three years this summer so the best part of two years. I only put the heating on in october/november and its off by feb, march at the latest, Cant stand the heat!

The rads look fine as much as i can see - not rusting or leaks anywhere. Cant see the pipes much tho.

When you bleed the rads do you get a slightly stinky bad egg/struck match smell..

Have you checked all the rad valves for weeps (System cold) could be verrrry minor weeps..

Sorry for all the questions, but it's looking like corrosion ...the more info you give the better..

No smell, I haven't checked the system cold yet, I'll try that tomorrow before i leave for work. Should i just nip up all the fittings as a precaution?

I wouldn't..may be that the copper pipes are corroded, a little nip could (Worst case) end up in a minor flood...

Bit more investigation required yet..

May be an idea to drain off a little from your drain off point, and see what sort of state the water is in..fairly sludged up would be my guess...

As you have a back boiler (not a combi) the pump is probably on the return pipe which means that most of the system is under negative pressure.

It's important that you only bleed the rads with the heating off checking for the smell as WO says, if you think you can smell it try and light it and see if it pops!

The gas could either be hydrogen caused by corrosion or be due to micro leaks on the fittings allowing air to be sucked in.

Also does the old backboiler make any kettling or banging noise when it has fired up for a while? Also check in the loft to see if the water is warm in the small (F&E) tank. Have you noticed if the tank has overflowed out the overflow pipe?

i concur

cold feed or near cold feed blocked or restricted, pump sucking in air from header tank, had one like this 4 weeks ago after a apparent "power flush" from the rad next to the boiler

go up in to the attic and the header tank was sucking more than a cheep whore
