thank you, i'll order the top one just to be sure i have enough, at present i only have 4 old type fuses for everything, 1 for cooker, 1 for lights and 1 each for upstairs and downstairs power, methinks the top one will be plenty,

As a rule I nearly always use 1.5 T&E for lighting but 1.0mm would almost certainly be fine on 90% of jobs that I do.

can you overdo it with 1.5mm if 1mm is enough for the job?
so say 1mm is enough but i used 1.5mm would that cause any probs?

No...unless you are running multiple spurs from say a ceiling rose..
