Hi Folks,

I have rescued an old garage off gumtree its in very good condition and just needed the lower cladding board replaced due to rot.

I want to paint it but I'm not sure what to use - I has been painted with the red cedar type colour over the years which I don't like.

I have been looking at

Ducksback - silver grey
Cupriol shades shed / garden paint
Ronseal Exterior shed / garden paint

does anyone have any recommendations as which might be best to use and will cover the current finish best?

thanks

I would avoid Ducksback it has a waxy finish and is hell to paint over with any other product later.

Are you talking a solid (opaque) colour or a stain (translucent) ??

Thanks, that was a concern with ducks back I also wasn't sure if it's opacity to cover the red cedar.

I think I'm looking for something with opacity rather than a stain!

I used Ronseal 5 year wood stain on my shed and decking though it is not recommended for that, I did not do the 3 coates for the quaranteed 5 year but found one coat was a good enough finish, I used Walnut which is quite dark; it is expensive by comparison with say Wickes own brand but I got a buy 2 for 3 deal which made it comparable.

If you have a Home Bargains store near you, they are selling 9 litres of ronseal timbercare in dark oak for £5.99. I've done my garden fence with it earlier this year and it has very good opacity.

If you want a colour change and a decent range to chose from then Cuprinol Shades is great imho. Wilkinsons has(d) a few 5L tins in the range very cheap - I got two colours to do my 'eatery' (covered outdoor decking) and its gone straight over the yellow-treated C16 with the 'print' stamped all over (two coats to get shot of the print) and is shedding rain like a good'un.
