Hi,

Was after some advice please. I apologise if I'm in the wrong place to be asking this.

Basically, I want to become a Plumber - I'm starting the City and Guilds 6129 course in Sept which I'm self funding and going to be studying in the evenings in total the course will run for 2 years.

Has anyone got any advice on things I can be doing to help my development in this area? I'm not after becoming a so called plumber in 4 weeks like some of these courses reckon, I just want to go about it the right way and get properly qualified otherwise my Dad would be turning in his grave (ex corgi registered plumber)

I'm currently 24 years of age and am quite competant with tools etc. I used to work for SKY as an Installer so am used to clients in there homes.

Any advice would really be welcomed.

Cheers,

Neil

Hi Neil,

Welcome to the forum Wink

It sounds like you are already going about it the right way!

Some practical experience would be good, so if you know any plumbers see if they need a hand with any large jobs.

Are you continuing to install the sky whilst you are training to be a plumber?

Thanks for the reply.

No not really doing any installs - still take interest in it though and try to help people out when I can.

Thought about setting up as a subby but haven't really done anything about it - they get a worse deal than SKY installers.

Loved the job as in being out and about and being hands on but the agro wasn't worth the job for me, not given enough time to do a quality job as you've got another 6 jobs to do that day etc.

Do miss alot of the action from the job though! Can't wait to get stuck into my Plumbing - turned down an interview with British Gas for an engineer role cos SKY offered me the job and were paying more at the time as the British Gas role was a Trainee position (pig sick as i could of been half way qualified by now!!!)

Ohh well such is life, on the property ladder now though so some good came of it!

Cheers,

Neil

I would say try to get some hands practice with a local company if you can... learn how "deferent" things can be in the real world, than at the college.

Good luck with it

nemey, some basic rules of plumbing for you:

1) Never, ever turn up or phone customers when you have said you will
2) Refuse to return calls
3) Learn to suck your teeth and shake your head simultaneously

That's a good start for you Wink

If you really want to become plumber than you should know all working and aptitude about this profession. If you want to take it as a career than you will need of training, practical experience or apprentices. Throughout your plumbing apprenticeship you will learn how to use tools with skill and safety, installation and finding faults.

you need to know about plumbing materials methods, as well as building and safety regulations. You need to have an eye for detail and be accurate, quick thinking and efficient. you should also be safety-conscious and not afraid to work at heights.

Plumbers need to be fit and healthy, and have good hand-eye co-ordination. They also need upper body strength as some lifting is involved.

Personally I feel you are wasting your time getting any Qualifications in Plumbing. It seems that everyone has a Plumbing Certificate nowadays, I wouldn't be surprised if you could buy one off Ebay Wink Laughing

I would hunt around looking for some experience, you may well have to work for nothing as most companies are inundated with applications for work experience.

Good luck anyway, if you do become a Plumber then I do hope you enjoy spending your £100k per year Laughing

I've asked this question a few times on several forums and you normally always get the same response. "Experiance Experiance Experiance" - Sod the qualifications bla bla bla.

It's definately right in a sence that an employer, will most certainly choose an experianced (unqualified) plumber over a qualified one.
It's the way the cookie crumbles in the plumbing world and most other jobs come to that.

You need a course that will give you a placement during or after training, and when your on that placement you give it your 110% best (Ask lots of questions) (be interested) (be fully alert ) - that means keeping of the Ale) (No late nights humping the Miss (Be prepared to get things wrong and take lots of Sh*T for screwing up) Graft till you drop) and then go home without a penny to show for it.

**But the payment here is not in nugets but GOLDEN KNOWLEDGE.

City & Guilds means nish - but what you learn to get that City & guilds means a hell of a lot more. - "knowledge is power, so show me the colour of your money Malady"

Keep it real - high 5 Smile
