Hi chums

I am removing the old bath taps at my mums tomorrow and replacing with a mixer shower tap. However after doing a little investigating at her house today and taking 2 hours to get the stop cock shut, I found that the upstairs cold water supply is directly fed from the rising main. This is an open gravity fed system by the way. I now am thinking will this shower still work ok, or will it be a nghtmare shower (hot) cold (hot) cold. I believe that under normal circumstances the cold feed upstairs is coupled up through the Main header tank in the lofty.

Thanks for any adviso

It's perfectly normal in some parts of the country (like where I am) to have all the cold taps on the mains supply and the hot from a tank. Other parts of the country traditionally have storage tanks for both as the water supply or pressure was inconsistent.
Best thing to do re the shower is find one that can cope with the different pressures and, if necessary, limit the cold pressure going to the shower. Depends very much on what the mains pressure actually is.

cheers Bob - nice Cat Meeeeowwww

I've bought a 15mil Pressure reducing valve from Screwfix - Around £35
I was also looking at Pressure equalising valves that seemed to be more for my problem but more expensive and they need connecting to the hot and cold feeds. I'm going to install the valve at the weekend and if that doesn't work then i need to slap myself round the face a few times and find out how easy it is to change from mains feed to storage feed without too much stress. and at the same time slightly higer the tank to get a little more pressure.
